Research on Deficit Irrigation During Different Stages of Peach Fruit Growth via Surface and Subsurface Drip Irrigation Systems

This study was conducted to investigate the effects of irrigation management on some vegetative and reproductive characteristics of the peach cultivar ‘J.H. Hale’ during 2022 and 2023 at Shahrekord Horticultural Research Station, Iran. The experiment was conducted as a split–split-plot experiment in a randomized complete block design with three factors, including surface and subsurface drip irrigation methods in the main plot; phenological stages of peach growth in the subplot; and regulated deficit irrigation (RDI) at three levels of 100, 80, and 60% of the tree water requirements in the subplot. Trees were subjected to RDI only once during the growing season at a specific phenological growth stage. The average tree height, crown width, and trunk diameter decreased by 60% under surface irrigation and RDI. The lowest reduction in fruit dry matter and the highest fruit taste index were observed after RDI in the second stage of fruit growth. A significant decrease in fruit total soluble solids (TSS) was observed in the full irrigation treatment. The most significant increase in electrolyte leakage (EL) was recorded when RDI was applied in the fourth stage (after harvesting). Compared with that in the control treatment, the relative water content (RWC) in both the irrigation systems and the RDI treatments decreased. In both years, the water use efficiency (WUE) in the 60% RDI treatment was greater than that in the other two treatments. The highest and lowest yields were observed when RDI was applied in the second and third stages of fruit growth, respectively. In general, reducing irrigation by up to 20% (80% RDI) at all phenological stages and applying 60% RDI (approximately 40% water reduction) at the second stage of fruit growth (core-hardening period) and the fourth stage of fruit growth (postharvest stage) are recommended to reduce water consumption for this cultivar.
