Standardization of Pruning in Dense, High Dense, and Ultra-High Dense Psidium guajava L. Orchards under Drip Irrigation

Canopy management in high-density plantations is directly linked to obtaining higher yields and extending the life of guava orchards. A 2-year consecutive pruning experiment was conducted on an 8‑year-old guava orchard under a drip irrigation system. Three guava cultivars, ‘Large Surahi’, ‘Small Surahi’, and ‘Golden’, were planted with three planting geometries: ultra-high dense plantation (ULHDP) (1 m × 2 m), high dense plantation (HDP) (1.5 m × 3 m), and dense plantation (DP) (3 m × 3 m). The canopies of all plants in the planting geometries were pruned to heights of 1.22 m, 1.52 m, and 1.83 m. The highest yield per acre was observed in cv. ‘Large Surahi’ with a planting geometry of ULHDP (1 m × 2 m), while the lowest was observed in cv. ‘Golden’ in ULHDP (1 m × 2 m). The cvs. ‘Large Surahi’ and ‘Golden’ plants planted in ultra-high, high dense, and dense geometry expressed significantly higher yields. Fruit size was smaller in plants under ULHDP (1 m × 2 m) in all cultivars. However, the greater number of plants per unit area under ULHDP (1 m × 2 m) (accommodating 5000 plants per ha) resulted in maximum yield with proper pruning. Despite this, fruit weight was low and quality was poor. Regardless of pruning levels, the maximum value for soluble sugars, vitamin C, and total soluble solids/titratable acidity ratio was observed in cv. ‘Golden’ compared to cvs. ‘Large Surahi’ and ‘Small Surahi’. Therefore, it could be summarized that a 1.83‑m canopy height and HDP (1.5 m × 3 m) are recommended for high qualitative and quantitative traits of produce.
