Reducing Flowering with Successive Applications and Different Concentrations of Gibberellic Acid in Alternate Bearing ‘Rainha’ Mandarin

Mandarin trees of the species Citrus deliciosa Tenore show a tendency to have irregular production between successive harvests. Applications of gibberellic acid (GA3) can be used to inhibit floral induction and differentiation in years of low production, attenuating alternate bearing. However, there is no conclusive information regarding the ideal concentration or the successive application of this product for the species in subtropical climate. Therefore, the objective was to evaluate different concentrations and number of applications of GA3 on the reduction of spring flowering after low fruit load harvests (off-year) in ‘Rainha’ mandarin trees. The study consists of two experiments carried out in commercial orchards. The experiments were carried out using adult trees of ‘Rainha’. The design was randomized blocks, with treatments in a factorial arrangement 42: concentrations of GA3 (0, 20, 40 and 60 mg L−1) with successive sprays (one to four sprays) of the product with an interval of 21 days, starting at the end of May. Flowering, shoot types and fruit set were evaluated. Anatomical studies of the buds were also carried out to identify the period of floral differentiation. There was interaction between the concentrations of GA3 and the number of successive applications for all variables studied. The use of four successive applications of 60 mg L−1 of GA3 in both experiments reduced flowering in the subsequent spring. In addition, these treatments brought about changes in the flowering pattern. The floral differentiation of ‘Rainha’ mandarin started in July in southern Brazil.
