Studies on the Effect of Plant Growth Regulators on Growth and Yield of Strawberry cv. ‘Chandler’ under Sub-tropical Conditions

Strawberry (Fragaria × ananassa Duch.) is a highly valued fruit crop known for its unique flavor, high nutritional content and economic importance. The growth, flowering, fruiting and fruit quality of strawberries is highly influenced by climatic conditions, such that plant growth regulators (PGRs) can modulate crop productivity and fruit quality. PGRs are organic substances produced naturally in many plants and responsible for controlling growth and other physiological functions. Therefore, PGRs such as gibberellin (GA), paclobutrazol and oxalic acid are essential factors that cause strawberry ripening, maturity indices and determine the quality of fruits. The present study emphasizes the effect of essential PGRs (GA3, GA4+7, paclobutrazol and oxalic acid) on vegetative growth and yield of strawberries. The findings demonstrated that treatment GA4+7 @ 40 ppm (T6) had a maximum plant height (23.40 cm), plant spread (28.13 cm), number of leaves per plant (32.00), leaf area (162.67 cm2) and petiole length (9.97 cm). Additionally, it was observed that GA4+7 @ 20 ppm (T5) resulted in the highest fruit volume (20.54 cm3), specific gravity (1.09), number of achenes (386.34), number of berries per plant (28.83), fruit juice (94.60%) and fruit yield (401.39 q/ha). On the other hand, paclobutrazol treatments showed reduced vegetative growth but promoted early flowering and fruiting. Overall, this study provides valuable insights into the effects of various PGRs on the production of ‘Chandler’ strawberries in the Jammu sub-tropics, offering potential avenues for optimizing strawberry cultivation practices in the region.
