<p>Fruit spoilage is the primary constraint affecting the quality and storage life of ber fruits after harvest. ‘Umran’ is a&#xa0;widely grown cultivar having large, attractive, golden yellow fruits with higher yield potential and excellent market value. However, the shorter storage life of 3–5&#xa0;days in ambient conditions makes it difficult to transport even to the domestic market. In this experiment, a&#xa0;pre-harvest spray of sodium nitroprusside (50 µM, 100 µM and 150 µM) was applied after pit hardening and at color break stage on 15-year-old ber plants. Harvested fruits were then stored for 28&#xa0;days to explore the impact of sodium nitroprusside on shelf life, quality attributes, bioactive compounds and antioxidant enzymes every 7&#xa0;days of cold storage (7.5 °C and 90–95% RH). The above investigation reveals that fruits treated with sodium nitroprusside at 100 μm resulted in a&#xa0;lower physiological loss in fruit weight, spoilage and maintained fruit firmness, phenols, carotenoids content, soluble solids content, ascorbic acid content, and antioxidant activity. Furthermore, activities of cell wall degrading enzymes like polygalacturonase, polyphenol oxidase, pectin methyl esterase, and catalase were suppressed and the activity of superoxide dismutase and peroxidase was increased. Therefore, it can be concluded that preharvest sodium nitroprusside treatment at 100 μm, can be effectively used as a&#xa0;signalling molecule for improving the shelf life of ber fruits up to 21&#xa0;days under cold storage conditions with acceptable quality attributes.</p>
