Domestication Efforts Through Studies on Vegetative Propagation and Seed Storage of Flacourtia montana J. Graham of Western Ghats, India

Despite the rich diversity of wild fruits, there is often an emphasis on cultivated varieties, overlooking indigenous wild fruits for value addition and commercial potential. The lesser-explored wild edible fruits native to the Western Ghats have well-established nutritional value and deserve immediate attention for domestication, popularization, and commercialization. However, progress in the effective management of wild fruit trees has been impeded due to insufficient knowledge of clonal and seed propagation techniques and long-term seed storage practices to ensure plant availability ex situ when needed. In this study, a concentration of 5000 ppm of indole-3-butyric Acid was optimum for vegetative propagation through stem cuttings and layering. The categorization of seeds revealed an intermediate type, where seeds can tolerate desiccation at moderate temperature; however, they are sensitive to chilling temperature conditions. Further investigation demonstrated that seed viability progressively declined over time, especially after storage for 49 days in a polycarbonate bottle kept at 16 °C and 45% relative humidity. Notably, seed pre-treatment in cold water proved instrumental in maximizing seed germinability. Given the importance of seedling survival in nursery conditions, a thorough analysis of photosynthetic pigments led to the conclusion that transferring seedlings from the controlled conditions at the six-leaf stage resulted in an impressive 100% survival rate during hardening in open nursery conditions. This insight has significant implications for successful propagation and cultivation practices.
