Rootstock Influence on the Incidence of Fruit Splitting in Daisy Mandarin under Sub-tropical Regions of Punjab

Fruit splitting is an important physiological disorder that adversely affect the yield and economic sustainability in fruit crops. This study evaluates the influence of two rootstocks, Rough lemon and Carrizo citrange, on fruit splitting in Daisy mandarin under the sub-tropical conditions of Punjab during 2021 and 2022. The investigation focused on morphological, biochemical and nutritional parameters associated with fruit splitting. Split and healthy fruits from both rootstocks were harvested at 90 days after fruit set (DAFS), a critical period for the onset of splitting. Results revealed the significant differences in splitting severity, with Carrizo citrange (14.28%) exhibiting a higher incidence of fruit splitting as compared to Rough lemon rootstock (12.99%). Pooled data from both years indicated that split fruits from Carrizo citrange and Rough lemon rootstock had significantly lower peel thickness as compared to healthy fruits. Furthermore, fruit weight, peel water content and enzymatic activities (polygalacturonase, cellulase, and peroxidase) were markedly higher in the peel of split fruits on Carrizo citrange than on Rough lemon than healthy fruits of both rootstocks. Conversely, the peel of fruits from Rough lemon exhibited significantly higher concentrations of potassium, calcium, and boron content. These findings suggest that reduced peel thickness, lower nutrient content (K, Ca, and B), and elevated cell wall-degrading enzymatic activity in Carrizo citrange are key contributors to fruit splitting in Daisy mandarin. The study concludes that Carrizo citrange rootstock is more susceptible to fruit splitting than Rough lemon due to unfavorable peel characteristics and biochemical attributes, highlighting the importance of rootstock selection in mitigating this disorder.
