Different Rooting Media and Planting Time Influence the Performance of Hardwood Cuttings of Kiwifruit Under Polyhouse Conditions
摘要
Propagation through cuttings is one of the most rapid and cost-effective ways to multiply fruit crops. However, kiwifruit cuttings are more difficult to root than cuttings from many other species. The present investigation was carried out with the objective to assess the effect of different growing media and planting timing on rooting of kiwifruit hardwood cuttings: 30 treatment combinations consisting of 10 rooting media (T1: (Sand−2″); T2: (Sand−3″); T3: (FYM−2″ + Sand−2″); T4: (FYM−3″ + Sand−3″); T5: (Cocopeat−2″ + Sand−2″); T6: (Cocopeat−3″ + Sand−3″); T7: (Sand−2″ + Poultry manure−2″); T8: (Sand−3″ + Goat manure−2″); T9: (Mixture 2″ [Sand + FYM + Cocopeat (1:1:1)]); T10: Control (Soil)) and three dates of planting (D1: 22nd January; D2: 29th January; D3: 8th February) laid out in randomized block design (factorial) replicated thrice under polyhouse conditions. The results revealed that planting time exerted a significantly positive correlation with rooting percentage, number of adventitious roots, total root length, fresh and dry root weight, shoot–root biomass, sprouting percentage, number of buds sprouted per cutting, shoot length, leaf area, fresh and dry shoot weight, leaf carbohydrate, leaf potassium and leaf nitrogen. The hardwood cuttings planted in rooting media Cocopeat−3″ + Sand−3″ (T6) on 8th February (D3) recorded the maximum number of adventitious roots (34.7), total root length (10.2 m), shoot–root biomass (97.7 g), leaf area (195.6 cm2) as well as fresh (98.5 g) and dry shoot weight (43.0 g), while maximum shoot length (202.5 cm) was reported in Cocopeat−3″ +Sand−3″ (T6) on 29th January (D2). Hence, the hardwood cuttings of kiwifruit, if planted between 29th January and 8th February with the media combination of Cocopeat−3″ + Sand−3″, can result in the development of good quality nursery plants of kiwifruit in 1 year under polyhouse conditions in a sub-temperate zone of India.
