<p>Maize, an important global crop, is threatened by herbivores, like the <i>Spodoptera frugiperda</i> larvae. Research in Brazil showed that <i>Crotalaria</i> sp. is an effective border crop to manage <i>S. frugiperda</i> infestations in maize field. However, the mechanism underlaying this effect remain unclear. This study investigated whether <i>S. frugiperda</i> oviposits on uninfested <i>Crotalaria spectabilis</i> plants and whether volatiles (HIPVs) emitted by <i>C. spectabilis</i> influence <i>S. frugiperda</i> behaviour, comparing these responses to those observed on maize plants. The results showed that females of <i>S. frugiperda</i> have a clear preference for egg-laying on uninfested maize plants over <i>C. spectabilis</i>. Blend of herbivore-induced plant volatiles (HIPVs) emitted by larvae-infested <i>C. spectabilis</i> was different the blend of HIPVs emitted by larvae-infested maize plants. Electroantennography (EAG) analysis revealed that <i>S. frugiperda</i> antennae respond to 12 volatiles emitted by maize, six of which were also present in the VOC blend of <i>C. spectabilis</i>. Wind tunnel bioassays showed that a synthetic blend of EAG-active HIPVs from maize attracted mated <i>S. frugiperda</i> females, whereas the blend containing EAG-active HIPVs from <i>C. spectabilis</i> did not elicit any behavioural response. These findings indicate that despite <i>S. frugiperda</i> being a generalist insect able of feeding and ovipositing on a wide range of plant species, they can recognize the most suitable host for their offspring using volatiles from host plants. The volatiles emitted by <i>C. spectabilis</i> do not influence the behavioural response of <i>S. frugiperda</i> females, indicating that this plant will not attract the <i>S. frugiperda</i> females when used as companion plants in maize areas.</p>
