<p>Dengue control directly relies on the control of <i>Aedes</i> vectors. The sterile insect technique (SIT) is a genetic control method that is based on irradiation to sterilize the males (or both sexes); an emerging field in vector control. In this review, SIT-based <i>Aedes</i> population control is discussed and contrasted. The principle, trials, success, and challenges in SIT-based <i>Aedes</i> population suppression concerning dengue control are explored. The ecological setting in which the sterile males are released, mosquito stages and number released, the type of sterilization agent used, and the estimated success is different in field trials conducted thus far. However, the SIT genetic-based approach has advantages as an alternative vector control tool to conventional insecticides to suppress the populations of <i>Aedes aegypti</i> L. and <i>Aedes albopictus</i> Skuse without affecting other organisms and the environment.</p>
