Persistent organic pollutants detected in feathers of feral Greater Rheas in Northern Germany: a comparative analysis with native populations of Argentina

Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) have been identified as a significant threat to environmental health. The presence of POPs was examined in a feral population of Greater Rhea (Rhea americana) established in Germany. Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), and organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) were analyzed in 12 feather samples. Out of the 17 POPs tested, 7 PCBs (28, 52, 101, 118, 138, 153, 180) and 5 OCPs (hexachlorocyclohexanes [α-HCH, β-HCH, γ-HCH] and dichlorodiethyltrichloroethanes [p,p′-DDE, p,p′-DDT]) were quantified, whereas no PBDEs were detected. The total levels of POPs in feathers were 98.69 ± 36,74 ng.g−1. The most frequently detected POPs were PCBs (89.87 ± 32.75 ng.g−1), followed by OCPs (8.81 ± 5.03 ng.g−1). POPs concentrations are lower than those measured in wild populations of Greater Rhea living in an intensive agriculture area in Argentina but higher than in European bird-of-prey species. These novel findings of POPs levels in rhea populations in the southern and northern hemispheres offer insights into the local and global distribution of these pollutants in the terrestrial environment. The presence and levels of POPs in this German Rhea population raise concerns, as these contaminants have been banned for years in Europe. These results also highlight the necessity to control Argentina's populations due to the high pollutant concentrations previously measured that could impact their survival. German population could be useful for monitoring local ecosystem contamination and studying the impact of pollutants on the animals' health to extrapolate these findings to the declining rhea populations in Argentina.
