<p>In the UK, Hawfinches (<i>Coccothraustes coccothraustes</i>) are on the Red List of Birds of Conservation Concern, following a significant decline in both population abundance and range. This study used miniature GPS and radio-tracking devices to investigate their local movements and habitat use in two study areas of England and Wales. Tracked Hawfinches ranged over wide but individually variable areas often spanning several kilometres, with broadleaved woodland an important habitat component both within individual foraging ranges and within the wider study area. Foraging sites close to woodland edges and open areas were selected in both spring/summer and winter periods. Foraging locations were positively associated with Beech (<i>Fagus sylvatica</i>) in both seasons, while Cherry (<i>Prunus</i> sp.) and Rowan (<i>Sorbus aucuparia</i>) were also important in spring/summer. Supplementary food sites targeted to enable capture of Hawfinches, along with general garden bird feeding stations were used extensively throughout, but particularly in the winter period, when 31% of all GPS locations were in close proximity to anthropogenic food sources. While these may provide important extra resource, they also expose birds to increased risk, particularly from transmissible disease. The ecological insights gained from this study should be used to inform both the management of existing and new woodlands to benefit Hawfinches in areas where they persist, and to stimulate recolonisation of areas from which they have been lost.</p>
