Rebuttal to Onrubia et al.: Misleading data and conservation risks: the moral responsibility of accurate reporting in Rüppell’s Vulture research

This rebuttal critically evaluates the study by Onrubia et al. concerning the presence of Rüppell’s Vulture in Europe, specifically analyzing data related to the autumn migration of vultures over the Strait of Gibraltar. Our reply contends that the data used by Onrubia et al. are flawed. In particular, errors and inconsistencies in the figures for Griffon and Rüppell’s Vultures, along with the omission of key data from certain years, undermine the study's reliability. Additionally, we highlight discrepancies in the timing of monitoring periods and raise concerns about the inappropriate selection of observatories. These inaccuracies not only compromise the study's conclusions but also could potentially affect conservation strategies for the critically endangared Rüppell’s Vulture. We stress the need for more accurate data usage and transparent reporting to ensure that conservation strategies are based on reliable scientific evidence.
