Impact assessment of cover plants on soil physiochemical properties of earth canals at paddy field in Ghana

Food security and poverty alleviation are key priorities in Ghana. Food demand is greater than supply owing to rapid population growth. In order to meet such demand, increasing rice production is one of an effective solution. Cover plants could be used to reinforce irrigation infrastructure and minimize the impacts of rainfall on irrigation facilities in paddy fields. However, data on the effects of cover plants on soil chemical properties are scant. Here, we aimed to analyze the effect of cover plants on soil physicochemical properties at an experimental site, by growing test plants for 4 years between 2012 and 2016. In addition, the results of soil analysis were considered based on the aboveground and underground weights of each test plant. The soil in 2012 was mildly acidic (pH 5.4) and oligotrophic, with an organic matter content of < 1%. Soil acidity in 2016 did not change significantly and had a pH of 5.7. However, organic carbon and total nitrogen increased, and the organic matter content increased from 0.8 to 2.4%. The exchangeable bases were in the order of Ca < Mg < K < Na, with decreases in Ca and Mg, and an increase in K, over time, although the total exchangeable bases did not change. Stenotaphrum secundatum developed more aboveground parts than the other test plants; while, Paspalum conjugatum developed more underground parts than aboveground parts. The cover plants improved the physicochemical properties of the soil. As a result, the function of irrigation facilities in paddy fields are expected to be also improved.
