<p>The effect of 30% fewer fungicide applications and no fungicides on the incidence of pear scab and other diseases on scab-resistant pear cultivar Hoshiakari was assessed for 4 years. Scab incidence on Hoshiakari ranged from 0 to 10% in both treatments, similar to the incidence on scab-susceptible cultivar Kosui, after standard fungicide application. Hoshiakari had a significantly lower incidence of fruit core rot than Kosui but was more susceptible to powdery mildew. The results provide a basis for using scab-resistant cultivars as part of a sustainable management program for Japanese pears.</p>
