Many women with epilepsy who are counselled in a neurological practice or in an epilepsy outpatient clinic report a link between seizures and the menstrual cycle. Seizure clusters within the menstrual cycle are referred to as catamenial seizure clusters or catamenial epilepsy. While cycle-related hormone fluctuations are undisputed, what influence on the seizure situation is proven and what does this mean for counselling? This article provides an overview of the current state of knowledge, therapeutic options and recommendations for practice based on the current literature.
