<p>Preconception screening for infectious/communicable diseases prior to assisted reproduction is regulated by European Union (EU) Directives. Basically, screening must be carried out within 3&#xa0;months prior to assisted reproduction and is valid for 24&#xa0;months. Screening includes testing both partners for hepatitis&#xa0;B and C as well as human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Member States can define stricter rules. Screening regulations differ between within-couple use and use of donor gametes or embryos. In 2027, the current directives will be replaced by the new Substances of Human Origin (SoHO) Regulation.</p>
