Infertility can be classified as a disease on the basis of the World Health Organization (WHO) statements and the definitions in the International Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems 10 (ICD-10) code on aspects of female and male sterility. The position statement of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM) opens up a new definition, in which infertility can be regarded not only as a disease but also as a condition or status. This is particularly because treatment with donor gametes, embryos and surrogate motherhood is also possible for homosexual female and male couples as well as single women and men. At the same time, questions regarding the definition of “desired medicine” need to be discussed.
