DFDBA plus T-PRF with and without vitamin D3 gel in intrabony defects: a randomized controlled trial

Effective periodontal therapy has increasingly focused on the resolution of periodontal defects through a range of regenerative approaches. This study aimed to assess and compare the effectiveness of DFDBA plus T-PRF with and without Vitamin D3 (Vit D3) gel in the treatment of intrabony periodontal defects. Thirty patients with stage III Grade B periodontitis patients having bilateral intrabony defects were involved in the split mouth randomized controlled trial. Defects were treated with DFDBA plus T-PRF (Group I) or DFDBA plus T-PRF with Vit D3 gel (Group II). At baseline, 6 and 12 months, clinical parameters of plaque index (PI), gingival index (GI), probing pocket depth (PPD) and clinical attachment level (CAL) were assessed. CBCT was used to measure the bone defect height (BDH), vertical bone loss (VBL), bone defect depth (BDD), mesio-distal bone defect width (MDBDW), bucco-lingual bone defect width (BLBDW), and bone defect volume (BDV) at baseline and 12 months. Greater reduction in BDD was observed in Group II (3.03 ± 1.68 mm to 1.84 ± 0.75 mm) and Group I (3.84 ± 2.20 mm to 2.51 ± 1.63 mm) (p = 0.045). BLBDW reduction was significantly higher in Group II (2.85 mm) versus Group I (1.80 mm) (p = 0.003). BDH (p = 0.117), VBL (p = 0.067), MDBDW (p = 0.071), and BDV (p = 0.689) were not statistically significant between groups. Vit D3 gel in combination with DFDBA plus T-PRF resulted in improved bone regenerative outcomes when compared to DFDBA plus T-PRF alone. (CTRI/2023/06/053940 [Registered on: 16/06/2023]).
