Serum uric acid to high‑density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio as a novel predictor of diabetic nephropathy: a cross‑sectional analysis of NHANES 2011–2018

By 2045, 783 million people are predicted to suffer from diabetes, a common metabolic disease. The development of diabetic nephropathy (DN), one of its most dangerous side effects, can lead to end-stage kidney disease. One new biomarker that has been connected to metabolic and inflammatory processes is the Uric Acid/High-Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol Ratio (UHR), which may be useful in DN prediction. Approaches In this study, 17,227 people’ data from the NHANES database (2011–2018) were examined. HDL cholesterol levels were divided by serum uric acid levels to calculate UHR. If the albumin-to-creatinine ratio (ACR) was 30 µg/mg or above, it was considered DN. Numerous clinical and demographic factors were used in the analysis. Decision curve analysis, univariate logistic regression, and ROC curves were used to investigate the relationship between UHR and DN. DN risk were positively correlated with UHR (OR 1.19, 95% CI 1.17–1.22, P < 0.0001). The AUC for UHR was 0.617, according to the ROC curve study. There was a 44% increased risk of DN for every unit rise in UHR (OR 1.44, 95% CI 1.23–1.69). A 14% increase in the likelihood of DN was noted for UHR levels over 5.44, indicating a substantial linear association between UHR and DN risk. Higher UHR quartiles translate into more risk, so UHR is a major predictor of DN. The possible clinical use of UHR for DN risk assessment is emphasized in this work.
