The Development and Management of Coal Seam Floor Water Disasters in China: Current Status and Future Directions

To more fully understand the development of coal seam floor water disasters in China, the underlying mechanisms were analyzed. Coal seam floor water inrushes were divided into three categories (karst collapse columns, fault activation, and mining-induced fracture-flow from limestone aquifers), and 11 subcategories. Proposing that water inrushes due to karst collapse columns are induced by the dynamic load disturbance of the overlying rock roof enabled us to clarify that disaster mechanism. We also established a macro-meso geomechanical model of floor faults and a mechanical criteria for water inrushes from different types of floor faults. One of the key causes of the macroscopic dynamic response characteristics of this type of floor water inrush accident turned out to be the energy storage effect of a thin layer of limestone water sandwiched between the aquifuge and the Ordovician limestone aquifer. Finally, we suggest potential areas of additional research to keep up with the development trends of the industry.
