<p>To balance the economic benefits of phosphate mining with its environmental and social costs, many countries have implemented a management framework to mitigate its negative effects and contribute to sustainable economic development. This can involve measures such as reusing, reprocessing, and reducing waste by promoting circular economy models. In the Tunisian context, phosphate mining activities have led to the accumulation of substantial volumes of byproducts that pose serious risks to both the environment and public health. This paper reviews the current Tunisian phosphate management strategy as well as the principal parameters and the potential ways of valorizing different phosphate byproducts in multiple applications. A closed phosphate treatment chain is proposed as a highly profitable future strategy for the phosphate mining industry while limiting the environmental effects of byproducts.</p> Graphical abstract <p></p>
