Stemonosudis fumea, a new barracudina (Aulopiformes: Paralepididae) from Japan, with taxonomic comments on the Stemonosudis rothschildi species complex

A new barracudina, Stemonosudis fumea, is described on the basis of 12 specimens [78.7–235.2 mm in standard length (SL)], collected from Japan and adjacent waters. This new species belongs to the Stemonosudis rothschildi species complex which is characterized by a large number of saddle-like patches on the dorsum anterior to the dorsal-fin origin (5–10 vs. 0–3 in other congeners). This new species is distinguishable from its congeners by the following combination of characters: 8–9 dorsal-fin rays; 34–36 anal-fin rays; 91–94 total vertebrae; 10–12 peritoneal pigment sections; 6 saddle-like patches on dorsum anterior to dorsal-fin origin; second dorsal saddle-like patch between dorsal fin and dorsal adipose fin located far posterior to vertical line through anal-fin origin; head depth 4.6–5.0% SL; snout length 10.0–11.3% SL; upper-jaw length 8.3–10.5% SL; lower-jaw length 11.2–13.9% SL; dorsal-fin origin located slightly posterior of mid-point between pelvic- and anal-fin origins; predorsal length 71.1–73.0% SL; horizontal distance between dorsal- and anal-fin origins 6.8–8.5% SL; horizontal distance between pelvic- and dorsal-fin origins 55.0–59.5% of horizontal distance between pelvic- and anal-fin origins; well-developed gill rakers on epibranchial, ceratobranchial and hypobranchial of first and second gill arches. The sequence variations in the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase subunit I gene of S. fumea sp. nov. and congeners confirm the genetic independence of the new species, but also infer the presence of at least two additional undescribed species within the species complex: one from the eastern Indian and western Pacific oceans; and the other from the western Atlantic Ocean.
