<p>The Japanese giant perch (<i>Lates japonicus</i>) belongs to the family Latidae and is endemic to Japan, where it grows to a total length of 130 cm. Its Japanese name “Akame” means red eye and as the name implies, it is characterized by its glowing red eyes. While this species is popular for recreational fishing in Kochi Prefecture, it has been listed as a rare species on the IUCN Red List as Vulnerable (VU). Therefore, for the conservation and sustainable fishery use of Akame, in this study we conducted long-term monitoring with multiple individuals using biotelemetry to understand their preferred habitat in Uranouchi Bay, Kochi Prefecture, western Japan. Five individuals were attached with ultrasonic transmitters and released. In autumn, as the water temperature deceased, the fish moved toward the bay-mouth, and thereafter the recording was suspended during winter. In the following spring, as the water temperature increased, the recording was resumed and the fish moved toward the bay-head. In summer, the fish spent most of their time at the bay-head, where the fish were caught and released last year. During their summer stay at the bay-head, all individuals seemed to use artificial floating structures during the daytime for resting. At nighttime with the high tide, large individuals seemed to use the river-mouth where the river flows into the bay-head for foraging. The bay-head of Uranouchi Bay would presumably be a suitable habitat for the growth of Akame through resting and foraging.</p>
