<p>The structure of photophores in juvenile stages of the mesopelagic fish <i>Vinciguerria mabahiss</i> (Phosichthyidae), a species endemic to the Red Sea, is described. Each individual <i>V. mabahiss</i> has between 140–144 photophores located on the head, ventral, and lateral body surfaces. Volumetric estimates of photophore size shows that they fall into three size classes. Histological examination of photophores shows that all have a similar composition, regardless of body region. The distribution and structural consistency of photophores in <i>V. mabahiss</i> suggests that they use bioluminescence primarily for counterillumination. This anatomical description of photophores in <i>V. mabahiss</i> can be used for future studies of function and evolution of bioluminescence in Stomiiformes and provides novel information on the structure of photophores in juvenile stages of fishes.</p>
