Effects of environmental stressors on macroinvertebrates trait distribution in the sediments of a southern Nigerian river

Aquatic macroinvertebrates serve as essential biological indicators of river health due to their varying sensitivities to habitat alterations and pollution. While traditional taxonomic approaches remain widely used in assessing macroinvertebrate communities, there is an increasing emphasis on functional trait-based methods in bioassessments. This study investigates the responses of macroinvertebrate functional traits to selected environmental variables in the sediments of Ugbogui River, southern Nigeria, over a 9-month period (August 2015–April 2016). Sediment samples were collected monthly from four stations, with macroinvertebrates gathered from both bank roots and shallow erosional biotopes. RLQ (R = (environmental variables, L = absolute abundance of macroinvertebrate taxa, Q = macroinvertebrate functional traits) and fourth-corner analyses were used to explore the relationships between macroinvertebrate functional traits and environmental variables. Traits such as cased/tubed body armoring, bivoltine voltinism, and burrowing movement exhibited positive associations with several environmental factors, except pH. In contrast, the predation feeding habit showed positive correlations with multiple environmental variables, excluding pH, organic carbon, total nitrogen, potassium, phosphate, zinc, and total hydrocarbon. Notably, the high concentrations of environmental variables in the streambed substrates impose significant adverse impacts on macroinvertebrate communities. Sediment deposition, in particular, poses substantial challenges to the ecological integrity of stream ecosystems, influencing the diversity and composition of macroinvertebrate assemblages.
