Environmental factors affecting the development of the green algae Mougeotia and cyanobacteria Dolichospermum in Lake Suwa, Japan

In Lake Suwa, Microcystis was the dominant summer species from 1948 to 1998; however, its prevalence sharply declined after 1999. Starting in 2011, Microcystis continued to decrease, and each year, either filamentous cyanobacteria (Dolichospermum) or green algae (Mougeotia) took over as the dominant species. To understand the factors influencing this annual variation in dominant species, we observed changes from 2011 to 2016 and analyzed their relationships with environmental conditions. A general linear model was used to clarify the factors affecting the growth of Mougeotia and Dolichospermum. Dolichospermum biovolume showed a positive correlation with water temperature. Mougeotia biovolume exhibited a negative correlation with soluble reactive phosphorus, although it showed a positive correlation with nitrate. Principle component analysis indicated that increased nitrate resulting from high summer precipitation contributed to the development of Mougeotia biovolume. These findings suggest that, even after oligotrophication, phosphorus levels, water temperature, and water column stability remain crucial factors controlling the dominant summer species in Lake Suwa.
