<p>Variations in female mate preferences have attracted considerable attention in recent decades. The condition and experience of females and environmental factors often influence the extent of mate preference. In the present study, we examined the effects of female reproductive status and experience on sexual motivation and mate preference in the guppy <i>Poecilia reticulata</i>. To measure the standardized sexual motivations and mate preferences of individual females with different reproductive statuses and experiences, we conducted a dichotomous choice experiment using two digitally modified male images: bright and dull male images. The results indicated that the reproductive status of females influenced both their sexual motivation and mate preference. Compared with pregnant females, virgin females, females immediately after mating, and post-partum females showed a longer preference time for the two male images and a higher preference ratio for bright male images. These results suggest that females with a high probability of conception may maintain a greater sexual motivation toward males and a stronger mate preference for high-quality males. The sexual motivation of females was also affected by their reproductive experiences; that is, females with many reproductive experiences and older females exhibited longer preference times with the two male images than younger females with fewer reproductive experiences. However, female body size did not influence sexual motivation or mate preferences.</p>
