<p>Plastic contamination has been extensively studied and reported in all types of environments. However, macrolitter dynamics, abundance, and composition in sudden urban sources are poorly understood. We analyzed the influence of the Brazilian Carnival in Rio de Janeiro and Espírito do Santo States, the most famous national event, on the abundance, composition, and weight of macrowaste before and after the carnival (street festival). Sampling was conducted 2 h before and immediately after the event. A total of 2,089 items were sampled, with 268 collected before the carnival and 1,821 after the street carnival, totaling 16,356&#xa0;g of waste and representing a 130% increase in solid waste abundance. The "Boitatá" street carnival, occurring in the second largest metropolis in Brazil, (Rio de Janeiro Municipality), had the highest abundance, number of types of waste, and waste weight. Plastic waste was the heaviest and most abundant. Fragments of costumes (ribbons) and disposable cups were the most representative items. Our results show that the carnival represents an acute source of short-term avoidable solid waste production.</p>
