Recycling water treatment sludge for applications enhancing landfill liner performance

The use of lysimeters in the laboratory to simulate landfill conditions is surveyed in this research, looking at how two barrier types perform: one with no additives and the other one that has undergone enhancement by 15% water treatment sludge ash (WTSA). The Experiment design incorporated subjecting lysimeters to leachate generated from waste, with key parameters such as moisture content, conductance contains, total volume, and pH, which were, respectively, measured every half hour and recorded daily. This investigation will measure its affinity levels and strength in accordance with the CPCB-2001 and USEPA 1989 standards to evaluate whether WTSA serves as a valid material for a liner in sustainable applications. The findings demonstrate that incorporating 15% WTSA into clay significantly enhances its hydraulic conductivity and membrane properties, which are important criteria for stopping contaminant movement and improving landfill liner performance. Lysimeter investigations remain critical as they help optimize waste containment strategies and select suitable materials for landfill barriers. Clay’s semi-permeable membrane properties can be boosted when trying to find more sustainable landfill engineering answers. The study presents new findings about materials for alternative landfill liners and their role in the evolving design and functionality of landfill containment systems that ultimately reflect on environmental sustainability and compliance with regulatory standards.
