<p>Monolayer polypropylene and monolayer polyvinyl chloride must be separated to recycle materials from press-through package sheets used in Japan. This study examined whether press-through package sheets discarded in pharmacies can be sorted with resin and whether the sorted sheets can be recycled. It took 3 months to complete this classification across eight pharmacies. The pharmacy staff divided the press-through package sheets into monolayer polypropylene, polyvinyl chloride, and others. We calculated the correct sorting rate of the press-through package sheets and the press-through package sheet loss rate. In total, 44.21 kg of press-through package sheets were collected. The correct sorting rates were 94.02% and 95.12% for the monolayer polypropylene and polyvinyl chloride, respectively. The press-through package sheet loss rate for the monolayer polypropylene was 21.47% and monolayer polyvinyl chloride was 28.18%. The sorted press-through package sheets were efficiently separated into the constituent resin and aluminum, and the plastic pellets could be molded from the separated resins. It is possible to sort recyclable press-through package sheets in pharmacies; however, to recycle all recyclable press-through package sheets accurately, improved manufacturing processes and the entire medical industry are essential.</p>
