<p>Payment for Ecosystem Services (PES) programs have proven effective in reducing deforestation over their lifetime. However, it is important to evaluate their long-term impact to understand whether management practices and incentives have resulted in lasting changes in land use and whether landowners continue to conserve forests without payments. This study evaluates the long-term effects of the PES program on sustaining low deforestation percentages in the Sierra Norte region of Oaxaca, where the program has been active since 2003. To evaluate the post-program deforestation percentages, we categorized parcels into different groups based on the duration since they stopped receiving payments (≤ 5&#xa0;years, 5–10&#xa0;years, and ≥ 10&#xa0;years). We employed spatial analysis and deforestation risk indices to compare deforestation rates in treated parcels against control areas. Our findings revealed that nearly 70% of parcels were situated in areas with low to medium deforestation risk. Parcels with 5 and ≤ 10&#xa0;years since program cessation showed no significant differences in deforestation compared to the control groups. However, parcels with ≥ 10&#xa0;years since program cessation exhibited significantly higher deforestation percentages than the control group. These results suggest that while the PES program reduces deforestation in the short term, its long-term effects diminish over time. Thus, emphasizing the importance of maintaining the program, in the long run, is crucial to ensure continued positive impacts on forest conservation and reduce deforestation percentages in the Sierra Norte region.</p>
