Reconstructed spatiotemporal changes of cropland in Vietnam from AD 1500 to 1950

Studying spatiotemporal changes of historical cropland is crucial for understanding the human impact on climate change and providing essential data for climate simulations. However, research on cropland history in the Central South Peninsula is limited due to fragmented historical records. By using the two indicators of grain possession and cropland area per capita, we estimated Vietnam’s cropland area from AD 1500 to 1950. We revised the population and agricultural production data, considering the influence of territorial changes on national statistics. For the peasant economy and export-oriented economy before and after AD 1885, we used four or five (natural and human-related) factors respectively to construct cropland allocation models. The reconstructed changes of cropland in Vietnam for AD 1500–1950 revealed three key features: (1) Cropland area grew from 568.81 to 5453.98 thousand hectares, with a slow growth stage followed by a rapid growth stage, with AD 1850 as the turning point. (2) Cropland expanded from the north towards the central and the south and from east to west, and the process of land reclamation can be broken down into three phases: a slow pace nationwide for AD 1500–1700, a faster pace in the central region for AD 1700–1850, and an accelerated pace nationwide for AD 1850–1950. (3) The reconstructed cropland changes in Vietnam exhibited greater fluctuations between AD 1500 and 1850 compared to the HYDE3.2 and SAGE datasets. Notably, most regions at crucial time points displayed a broader distribution of cropland, accompanied by a lower rate of land reclamation. (4) Using the cropland data in AD 2000 interpreted by remote sensing and the paddy field distribution information from the topographic map of Vietnam in AD 1954 as references, the cropland results reconstructed by our model showcased a greater degree of spatial distribution consistency when compared to the HYDE3.2 dataset. This study elucidates the spatiotemporal evolution of cropland in Vietnam from AD 1500 to 1950 and provides higher precision cropland data for correctly evaluating the impact of human activities on terrestrial carbon balance.
