A risky driving behavior-accident risk association model for novice Chinese drivers based on impulse control and driving experience

Individual differences in cognition and driving experience often cause risky driving behaviors and road traffic accidents. The objective of this study was to investigate the role of the cognitive dual-systems model and driving experience in risky driving behavior and accident risk in young Chinese drivers. A convenience sample of drivers (n = 205, mean age = 24.88 (2.477) years) was obtained. The drivers completed a self-report questionnaire that measured demographic characteristics (including age, gender, driving experience (driving years, driving kilometers, daily driving hours, and weekly driving frequency), and accident risk (number of road accidents, number of tickets, and driver’s license point deductions), executive functions (including Empathy (EM), Strategic Planning (SP), Organization (ORG), Impulse Control (IC), and Motivational Drive (MD)), sensation seeking (including Thrill and Adventure Seeking (TAS), Experience Seeking (ES), Disinhibition (DIS), and Boredom Susceptibility (BS)), and risky driving behaviors (including Aggressive Violations, Ordinary Violations, Errors, and Lapses). The multiple linear hierarchical regression was used to determine the relative contribution of each predictor to the risky driving behavior and its sub-behaviors. Structural equation modeling (SEM) was used to verify the complex potential relationships between IC, daily driving hours, weekly driving frequency, and driving kilometers on the one hand and risky driving behaviors and accident risk on the other. The results showed that IC and daily driving hours had a direct negative effect on risky driving behavior with a variance contribution of 28.2%. Driving kilometers, weekly driving frequency, and risky driving behavior had a direct positive effect on accident risk, and IC and daily driving hours had an indirect effect on accident risk with an explained variance contribution of 44.1%. The findings highlight the substantial influence of IC and driving experience on risky driving behaviors and accident risk among young Chinese drivers and provide new insights into the design of evidence-based driver-initiated behavior modification, driving education, and accident prevention. In addition, the linear regression results showed that gender predicted Ordinary Violations, suggesting differences in risky driving behavior between men and women, which should be further investigated in future studies.This will provide new insights into the prevention of driving accidents.
