摘要

This paper examines the impact of environmental target constraint (ETC) on green technology innovation (GTI) of Chinese enterprises. The results reveal that ETC can effectively promote enterprise GTI. ETC has a more significant promoting effect on GTI of eastern enterprises, high productivity enterprises, and state-owned enterprises. ETC promotes enterprise GTI by increasing government subsidies, providing tax benefits, and improving the level of enterprise responsibility. ETC mainly stimulates the source control of GTI. ETC has a significant role in promoting strategic innovation, but its impact on substantive innovation is not significant. The GTI of enterprises induced by ETC is a resource allocation effect based on existing innovation activities, rather than a crowding out effect on other technological innovations. Economic growth target constraints weaken the promotion effect of ETC on enterprise GTI. This paper provides important empirical evidence for China's environmental governance and high-quality development of enterprises.
