Ultrasonography of the vagus nerve in Parkinson’s disease: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Previous studies suggest the presence of atrophy of vagus nerve (VN) in patients with Parkinson’s Disease (PD). This study aims to comprehensively evaluate the changes in the VN detected by ultrasonography in PD patients.
MethodsA systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted. We searched across databases including PubMed, Embase, MEDLINE, Web of Science, CNKI for literature on VN changes in patients with PD up to April 1, 2024. The included studies underwent quality assessment and publication bias evaluation. The random-effects model was used to pool the effect size. The weighted mean difference (MD) and its corresponding 95% confidence interval (CI) were used as the effect size index to evaluate VN changes in PD patients. Sensitivity analysis and subgroup analysis were performed.
ResultsA total of 17 studies with 1,242 participants were included. The cross-sectional area of the left VN (MD = -0.41, 95% CI-0.54 ~ -0.28, P < 0.00001) and the right VN (MD = -0.44, 95% CI -0.59 ~ -0.30, P < 0.00001) in the PD group was significantly smaller than that of the control group. Subgroup analysis indicated that the severity of motor symptoms positively correlate with the severity of VN atrophy.
ConclusionsThe current study demonstrates the presence of VN atrophy in patients with PD. Additionally, the atrophy becomes more prominent as the motor symptoms progresses.
