摘要

Introduction

Sexual dysfunction manifests as various challenges during sexual activity and is a prevalent condition that significantly impacts quality of life. Post stroke sexual dysfunction (PSSD) is particularly concerning, yet it is often overlooked by both healthcare providers and patients.

Methods

We conducted a comprehensive literature review, examining research and reports related to sexual dysfunction following stroke. Our aim is to synthetize an extensive, detailed and up-to-date overview of its prevalence, underlying mechanisms, and interventions.

Results and Conclusion

PSSD, often underestimated among stroke survivors, has a high incidence but remains poorly understood in terms of its neurobiological mechanisms. Swift and accurate diagnosis, coupled with timely rehabilitative intervention, is crucial. However, the development of comprehensive guidelines is impeded by a lack of high-quality literature. This review seeks to present recent advances in understanding PSSD, and to advocate for a structured strategy in terms of the long-term rehabilitation of stroke survivors.
