<p>True content experts are becoming increasingly important in a&#xa0;world of growing complexity and interdependence. With this, it is crucial that we do not lose the competencies for developing new ideas and to assess the quality of artificial intelligence. Central to this endeavour are individuals with specific content expertise, and an understanding of how expertise is acquired. The present contribution outlines the current evidence. Expertise develops as a&#xa0;complex learner-driven process incorporating numerous essential elements. Expert characteristics include a&#xa0;special wealth and structure of knowledge, strong commitment towards learning, and a&#xa0;specific way of integrating knowledge into practice. In this article, we elaborate on the differences between expertise and experience, models of expertise development, and typical learning strategies of experts. This contribution also aims at motivating readers to aspiring expertise in a&#xa0;field of their own interest.</p>
