Understanding the pathophysiology of burns is essential for a tailor-made treatment and improvement of patient outcome. Important factors influencing treatment include the mechanism of trauma and the extent of the burn. In addition, burn patients often suffer concomitant trauma and systemic reactions that can lead to severe complications. The timely referral to a specialized burn center, appropriate airway and fluid management, targeted coagulation treatment and interdisciplinary collaboration are key factors in be able to have a decisive influence on treatment. Prehospital care plays an essential role, particularly in relation to airway and fluid management, including early intubation for facial burns or inhalation trauma.
