摘要

Background

In German emergency departments, nurses are responsible for performing in-hospital triage. Incorrect triage decisions can negatively affect the allocation of resources and therefore patient safety. Simulation-based learning (SBL) is a proven method for triage nurses to acquire the relevant competencies that are needed to improve patient safety and resource management in emergency departments.

Objective

To enquire about the implementation of SBL in the training of triage nurses, and the effect of SBL on participants and their subsequent triage performance.

Methods

A narrative review was conducted searching the databases PubMed, Embase, CINAHL, and Web of Science, complemented by Google Scholar and citation tracking.

Results

Eight studies were identified that examined the use of SBL in the context of triage. Following participation, triage nurses demonstrated a significant increase in subject-specific knowledge and improved triage accuracy. Furthermore, the rate of undertriage significantly decreased.

Conclusion

SBL could be an effective method for improving triage competencies among nurses in emergency departments.
