Background <p>Climate change is seen as one of the greatest threats to humanity. The healthcare sector makes a&#xa0;not insignificant contribution to greenhouse gas emissions. However, sustainability in the emergency medical services (EMS) has only played a&#xa0;relevant role in recent years.</p> Aim <p>The aim of this study is to evaluate sustainability in ambulance services.</p> Method <p>In all, 214 EMS providers were contacted in writing and asked to complete a&#xa0;web-based online survey on sustainability in the ambulance services. Participants were asked, for example, about the use and disposal of disposable and reusable items, the use of alternative energies and digitalization.</p> Results <p>Of the 214 medical directors, 94 (44%) took part in the survey. Less than 5% of the EMS employ sustainability officers. The use of disposable items dominates at around 90%. Digital deployment documentation is used in 75% of rescue service areas. However, alternative drive systems for EMS vehicles are hardly used.</p> Discussion <p>Although environmental awareness appears to exist in principle in various areas of the EMS, there is a&#xa0;lack of implementation of concrete measures. The use of reusable items, recycling and alternative types of transportation offer starting points for optimization.</p> Conclusion <p>Existing concepts from the healthcare sector can be used as a&#xa0;template for implementing environmental protection in EMS. Finally, political support for the implementation of these measures is essential if EMS are to make their contribution to environmental protection.</p>

Background

Climate change is seen as one of the greatest threats to humanity. The healthcare sector makes a not insignificant contribution to greenhouse gas emissions. However, sustainability in the emergency medical services (EMS) has only played a relevant role in recent years.

Aim

The aim of this study is to evaluate sustainability in ambulance services.

Method
