<p>The rapidly increasing pre- and intrahospital use and importance of emergency sonography worldwide and the constantly improving technological possibilities have led to a&#xa0;growing need for quality assurance and structured training. Numerous emergency and intensive care medical societies require sonographic skills as a&#xa0;core competency in their guidelines. They often rely on recommendations from the international or national societies for sonography or develop their own further education and training programs. Course formats are increasingly being extended to nonmedical emergency medical staff or integrated into student teaching. To the authors’ knowledge, internationally applied standards for acquiring and maintaining skills in emergency ultrasound do not exist. Standardized requirements for structured training and supervision in daily practice are proven tools for quality assurance and could help to address challenges. Recommendations from international associations for ultrasonography in medicine and their current efforts to standardize education and quality assurance are already being taken up by national course concepts, but implementation in everyday practice, particularly in the areas of skills maintenance and supervision, seems to be difficult. The aim of this work is to designate the requirements for emergency sonography training and continuing education in the context of rapid expansion due to technological advancements while maintaining quality standards. It also seeks to sensitize novices as well as experienced emergency sonographers about the topic and to evaluate opportunities for improving the integration of emergency sonography training and supervision in daily routine, using examples of established, structured course concepts in German-speaking countries.</p>
