Smartphone-based alerting systems are designed to shorten the resuscitation-free interval. Technological and conceptual characteristics are fundamental for establishment.
ObjectivesQualitative and quantitative evaluation of the new system version 3.0 of the alerting system “Region of lifesaver”.
Materials and methodsThe alerting algorithm was redeveloped for system 3.0: When the alarm is activated, the first responders are asked which means of transport they will use to get to the scene. The estimated time of arrival is calculated using individual routing. The two first responders with the shortest calculated arrival time are routed to the scene, the third is directed to the nearest automated external defibrillator (AED), and the fourth instructs the ambulance service. As part of an observational study, operations over a 3-month interval before and after the system update (July 2023) were analyzed for the Freiburg region (1531 km2, 493,036 inhabitants).
ResultsThe rate of accepted alerts remained at a similar level of 63%. A reduction in arrival times from 05:38 min (03:21; 08:15) to 03:59 min (02:56; 05:30) was realized (p < 0.001).
ConclusionThe further development of the alerting algorithm followed by system update resulted in shorter arrival times. Intelligent dispatching of first responders can be realized technically. Further studies are required to detect quality parameters of the various systems on the basis of the international reporting standard for first responder systems and to continuously improve the functionality of those systems.
