A reduction technique is a method by which the joint surfaces of a dislocated joint can be brought back into correct alignment. As dislocations are often accompanied by additional injuries, it is important to achieve reduction as soon as possible, especially when nerves or blood vessels are involved. In cases of vessel or nerve involvement reduction without prior radiological documentation can be justified. Traumatic dislocation and the reduction can be very painful, so that analgosedation is almost always necessary (less so in habitual dislocation). Subsequently, the joint is immobilized and an X‑ray control is carried out. Additional diagnostic measures, such as CT or MRI are sometimes necessary to detect accompanying injuries, which also partly determine the procedure. The age and requirements of the patients must also be included in the treatment planning. This article describes the reduction techniques for various joints, e.g., the shoulder, hip, knee, elbow, fingers and toes.
