„Emergency critical care“ in der Notaufnahme. Literaturübersicht und aktuelle Konzepte

Up to 10% of all emergency patients require intensive care or at least monitoring, and the number is rising. However, in practice, only a few of these cases can be transferred directly to an intensive care or monitoring unit. For this reason, there is sometimes a need for prolonged emergency medical care of critically ill patients in the emergency department. Under the motto “upstairs care, downstairs,” large emergency departments in the Anglo-American region have developed the concept of emergency critical care units (ECCU) for this purpose. This concept stands for early, high-intensity care of critically ill patients in emergency departments with the aim of achieving best possible stabilization and allocation in the hospital. In this review, previous data on ECCUs are reviewed and applied to the situation in German emergency departments.
