The training of German paramedics is supposed to impart technical, methodological and social skills that allows both team-focused participation and independent provision of prehospital care. Accordingly, German paramedics also play a key role in prehospital airway management by supporting the emergency medical services (EMS) physician field responder in an interprofessional team, but sometimes also having to independently ensure airway management of an acutely ill or injured patient. The following article describes this special role of German paramedics and addresses essential steps needed to gain and maintain expertise in this discipline.
