In emergency medicine, diagnosis by means of an electrocardiogram is important to provide appropriate care. Even though the electrocardiogram is a long-established procedure, it has been and continues to be developed further. Therefore, it is important for healthcare workers in emergency medicine to be well informed about new trends and the corresponding new possibilities. New trends regarding arrhythmia, ischemia, and sudden cardiac death are presented. Their relevance for emergency medicine is highlighted.
