Andreas Smits and electrochemistry

Andreas Smits is known for his concept called the theory of allotropy, which states that every substance is a complex conglomerate of associates, dissociation products, and other compounds that are in equilibrium with a parent one. This hypothesis served him as a basis for the theoretical conceptualization of electrochemical experiments, especially in the field of corrosion. Some authors believe that it was Andreas Smits who first suggested the possibility of a slow ion discharge. Smits himself pointed this out in his article (Z. Phys. Chem. 172A:470–472 (1935)). However, this opinion is not valid, as may be shown by the analysis of works by Smits. Everything Smits wrote about the nature of overpotential shows that he was using a hypothesis very similar to the one proposed by Tafel. Such considerations have nothing to do with the concept of slow charge transfer. Although Prof. Smits did not leave his mark on electrochemical theory, the outline of his views allows the reader to learn how the phenomena of overpotential and corrosion were explained at the beginning of the twentieth century.
