Influence of heat treatments on the corrosion, electrochemical, and sacrificial anodic performance of Mg-Er-Yb alloy

The present study aims to investigate the effect of heat treatment conditions on the corrosion characteristic of Mg-1Er-1Yb alloy. The heat treatment process is carried out with 3 Samples at a constant temperature of 200 °C for 5, 10, and 15 h respectively. The microstructure and corrosion behavior of the specimens made of Mg-1Er-1Yb alloy were studied. The microstructure and precipitated phases were analyzed by optical microscope (OM), scanning electron microscope (SEM), energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The corrosion behavior was studied by potentiodynamic polarization, electrochemical corrosion test, and immersion test in 3.5% sodium chloride (NaCl) solution. Also, the sacrificial anodic performance was analyzed. The results showed a substantial improvement in the corrosion resistance and sacrificial anodic performance of the heat-treated (10-h) Mg-1Er-1Yb alloy.
