Fabrication of antibacterial drug (furazolidone) sensor using zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8)–derived ZnO clusters as sensing material

In the present work, we have synthesised ZIF-8-derived ZnO clusters using simple approach. The ZIF-8-derived ZnO clusters have been employed as an electrochemical sensor for the detection of furazolidone (FZE), a prevalent antibacterial drug. The as-synthesized ZnO clusters have been investigated for its physical and chemical properties using X-ray diffractometer (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) analysis. The characterization study reveals the successful phase pure synthesis of the ZnO without any other impurities. The as-synthesized nanoparticles were further used to modify glassy carbon electrode for the electrochemical detection of the furazolidone (FZE) using cyclic voltammetry (CV) and linear sweep voltammetry (LSV) techniques. The results reveal the modified ZnO to be a potent electrochemical sensor with efficiently high sensitivity, selectivity, stability and reproducibility. The observed limit of detection (LOD) was 0.7 µM with 1.36 µA µM−1 cm−2 sensitivity.
